Roads entering the center historically carried livestock, crops and small producers into the market town. The street network helps explain why trade and civic institutions concentrated here.
Imagine the site early in the morning rather than as it looks during a quiet visit: deliveries, inspection, bargaining and household shopping explain why the market became central.
A market is an information system as much as a shopping place. Prices, supply and reputation moved between countryside and town through face-to-face exchange.
Seen on foot, the distance from the previous historic layer matters. Small towns often place elite, working and sacred spaces within only a few minutes of one another.
The stop also prevents the town’s history from being reduced to its single most famous monument. Different institutions produced different kinds of local identity.
